Legal Studies Overview

Program Information

Are you interested in a legal studies university, but are still unsure if a legal studies school is right for you? The Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies degree program at South University provides students with a number of academic options. Individuals with an associate’s degree in Paralegal Studies, or those who are currently pursuing an associate’s degree in any major, may transfer into the Legal Studies bachelor’s degree program. Students with no prior paralegal education may take the full baccalaureate program.

The American Bar Association definition of paralegal is “…a person, qualified by education, training or work experience who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, corporation, governmental agency or other entity and who performs specifically delegated substantive legal work for which a lawyer is responsible.” Extensive practical training prepares graduates, under the supervision of an attorney, to perform many of the functions in a legal office, including but not limited to interviewing clients and preparing legal documents and cases for trial with the exception that they cannot give legal advice, set fees, or represent clients in court.

Our four-year bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies program can prepare you for entry-level employment in the legal field by providing you with a broad academic background in: general education; fundamental theoretical legal concepts; and practical applications.

Columbia, Montgomery, Partially Online, Savannah and West Palm Beach are approved by the American Bar Association.

Only the South University program at Savannah has had courses approved in an alternative (online) delivery format by the ABA. Additionally, those who enroll in the partially online Paralegal and Legal Studies Programs in Savannah must complete LGS 1005 Legal Research and Writing I and three other paralegal/legal studies courses of their choice, with guidance from their program director or academic counselor in the traditional classroom format on a South University campus or other institution that meets our transfer criteria.
