COLUMBIA, S.C. – South University announced today that Robert J. Wolff, Ph.D., was appointed by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to serve on a review committee establishing the biosafety guidelines for teaching laboratories. Dr. Wolff is a Professor of Health Science and the interim program director for Health Science at South University.

“This appointment is a great opportunity for Dr. Wolff, and a great way for South University to showcase the expertise we have in our health science faculty,” said David Shoop, Ph.D., dean of academic affairs and operations. “As university laboratories become more complex, laboratory safety standards must also change for the continued protection of our students, faculty, and the public.”

The biosafety guidelines, which the CDC will adopt as its regulations, provide requirements and recommendations for the safe handling of microorganisms in university, high school, and other educational laboratories.  It deals with both Biosafety Level 1 (BSL  1) and BSL 2 organisms, the levels designated for organisms that pose the lowest risk to humans and the environment.< /p>

Dr. Wolff has been on the faculty of South University since 2004. He has also taught at the University of South Carolina, Furman University, and Trinity Christian College (Palos Heights, Ill.), among others. He has spoken to many community groups and published numerous articles in academic journals and the popular press about spiders, which he considers man’s true best friend.

Wolff earned his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, a Master of Arts degree in Biology from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Hope College in Holland, Mich.
